YOUTH CLUB AND LINK GROUP

Entertaining the Python

Entertaining the Python

The Youth Club and Link Groups met again in September to begin a busy term of interesting activities. The Youth Club began the term with a Family Service preparation. The following week we entertained a 3 metre long Python who very kindly posed for photos with all the members. We spent an evening at Glendene getting our brains in gear for a selection of fiendish games, including the challenge of getting an object across the swimming pool in a newspaper boat. Jane organised an evening of sugar mice and bread making where we made the Harvest loaf that went in front of the Altar on Harvest Sunday. The rolls that were made were filled with beefburgers at the end of the evening. Swimming at Petersfield was a popular choice and the members certainly enjoyed the Barn Dance. Lynn Winter came to tell us about her trip to Ghana with slides and a video which we found very interesting.

The Link Group also enjoyed the Barn Dance, although we were not quite as energetic as the Youth Club (signs of old age!!) Yvonne Jones came to lead a workshop on flower arranging before letting us loose on the Church for the Harvest Festival decorations. It was good fun helping make the Church so lovely and David and Craig found getting the leaves onto the front of the balcony without falling off quite a challenge. A Family Service is now being planned and we also joined the Youth Club for the Ghana evening.

The two groups also joined forces to attend Youthquake in Winchester Cathedral, an annual outing these days. Once again we enjoyed a variety of workshops on a wide range of topics and three excellent bands. The fireworks at the end were wonderful but St Swithun seems to have a quirky sense of humour; having gathered hundreds of young people in the Close he allowed the heavens to open, drenching them in a rain storm second only to Noah's! Needless to say the journey home was not very pleasant.

In October we took over the Church Hall, irons and sponges in hands, for a morning in aid of One World Week and raised £80. Thank you to all who brought their cars to be washed or their ironing to be done. Several representatives from both groups presented their money at a special service in Bartons Hall.
