YEW TREES IN THE CHURCHYARD

The Yew Trees

As most people are aware, the four yew trees in the front of our church are beginning to cause a few problems.

The bulk of so much dark green hides the front of the church and the two on either side of the main path restrict the passageway. Also, of course, the berries falling on the path in the Autumn make for a very slippery surface.

Some people may not be aware that English yew is used in the manufacture of a drug for the treatment of cancer. The wood is also in demand for carving; it has a most beautiful finish when carved and polished.

Because of the valuable nature of the trees, it should be possible to remove them at very little cost to the church.

Some members of the P.C.C. therefore, are looking at the possibility of having the trees removed and maybe replace them with young trees sited nearer the boundary of the grounds.

Your comments on this proposal will be greatly appreciated as we would not wish to make changes without the consent of the congregation.
