ST GEORGE'S LADIES GROUP

We had a welcome return visit from Mr Alec Reynolds when he came to talk about "New Bloomers", the bloomers being the slip-ups made by people talking on radio programmes or on the television and of errors printed in the press.

He related many amusing anecdotes and had the audience in fits of laughter. He also spoke of the many coincidences between the assassination of President Lincoln and President Kennedy concerning dates and names of people involved in these tragedies.

A group of about thirty members of the group visited the new police station in Waterlooville where we were shown around by a policeman and policewoman based there. The station which has a glass roof has been designed to give the impression of lightness and space and the wide corridor running the length of the building looked very attractive with trailing plants hanging down the walls.

We had a tour around the offices and saw the cells where prisoners can be detained overnight. There was a dining room and a small kitchen with a microwave oven where a meal could be heated up and as police officers are on call the whole time they are on their 10 hour shift it was a question of fitting in a snack as and when possible.

The policewoman walked her beat in Waterlooville and showed us her truncheon, which she carried in case of trouble, and her radio which enables her to keep in contact: with her base. Shop lifting and drugs seemed to be the the most common offences they had to deal with.

This was a very interesting and informative evening and thoroughly enjoyed by the group.
