FROM THE VICAR

Hardly a day passes without some reference in the media to the Millennium or what may or may not happen in the Millennium Dome! It is all becoming a bit of a bore and even now it is uncertain what will be in 'the Dome', apart from the 'Spirit Zone', nor is it certain that the Archbishops of Canterbury or Westminster will have the opportunity to say a prayer or not.

At St George's for some time we have been wondering how to celebrate this great Christian event in our parish, and we have decided to form a Millennium Committee to propose some special activities during the year beginning on Christmass Eve l999. One idea I have in mind is that we have a large Millennium Candle in the sanctuary near the pulpit (rather than distribute at great expense candles to every house in the parish), which will be lit at the Midnight Mass on Christmass Eve and burn at every service throughout the millennium year, something like the great Easter Candle of the Resurrection.

This month we shall be celebrating the greatest event that has ever happened (far more important than Christmass), the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a time when all Christians should be at the foot of the cross on Good Friday and shout Alleluia on Easter Day. It is vitally important in this age of dis-belief that Christians should be at worship and witness to our Resurrection Faith, otherwise by the year 2033, there may not be enough Christians celebrating the millennium of the Resurrection!

With my prayers and Easter Blessing to you all.

Your priest and friend,

Fr Malcolm Ferrier
