OBITUARY

Thomas Raymond Baines (1910—1999)

Ray Baines was born in Milton where his father was Bandmaster at Eastney Royal Marine Barracks.

He served an apprenticeship as a Pharmacist in Surbiton, Surrey where he gained the M.P.S. diploma. He worked as a Pharmacist in various places and in 1938 bought Spencers Chemist in Waterlooville and continued to trade under that name for 17 years until he sold the business in 1955.

He married Christine Barham of Eastney in 1935 who pre-deceased him in 1991 after 56 years of marriage. Ray missed her greatly and never really got over her loss. They had no children. During WWII he served in the Village Home Guard and was the Gas Identification Officer. After retirement he did locum work and lectured at Highbury College for some years.

Ray was a regular worshipper and communicant at St George's with his wife and for some years, following an accident when Chris broke her back, received the Blessed Sacrament at home. In recent years he has been a regular worshipper at the 10.am Wednesday Eucharist.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Fr Malcolm Ferrier
