Stones for Health

We were very pleased to welcome Anne Breakwell as our speaker again, this time her subject being Stones for Health. She originally trained as a metallurgist and became interested in natural stones and now makes natural stone jewellery. About twelve years ago she had a stall at a craft fayre and two of her customers started talking about the healing power of stones, something she had not considered before. She decided to investigate this theory and attended seminars on the subject and also read some books.

The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans believed each stone emits a certain energy which has beneficial powers and wore stones which were made into jewellery. Rock crystal was a very popular gem as it was believed it had general healing properties and this was sometimes crushed to powder and swallowed in water. Today crystal plays a very important role in our lives and is used in many ways such as silicone chips and in watches.

Anne brought a large selection of her jewellery made up into necklaces, bracelets, keyrings and brooches from a large range of stones such as the beautiful pale pink rose quartz to the orange/red cornelian. These proved to be of great interest to the audience and I think most of us went home with something made of our favourite stone.

Cheese and Wine Party

As the wine and cheese party with an auction has proved so popular in the past it was decided to hold one again this year with the proceeds of the auction going to our charity, which this year is St George's church hall. Everyone was asked to bring something to sell and we had a diverse range of goods, such as kitchen utensils, books, jewellery and pictures. Our chairman, Dianne Woolgar did an excellent job as the auctioneer and the bids came in thick and fast. Halfway through the evening we stopped to enjoy the delicious spread organised by the committee and at the end of the evening we were delighted to find we had made just over £100.
