FROM THE VICAR

The month of September will see many of us back to the normal weekly routine after the summer holidays, although I shall be taking my own holiday during the first two weeks. I hope that those of you who have been away will return refreshed and those who have not will have had the opportunity of a day away or have been able to take it easy for a while.

During this month there are several important events, the first being the Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 17th when we shall have the Family Eucharist at 10.am, and I hope a full church as usual. It is also the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the Royal Air Force Association will be holding their Commemoration Service at 11.30.am.

We continue with our Parish Celebration of the Millennium with an Outing by coach to Canterbury on Saturday 23rd. We shall visit Canterbury Cathedral, the Mother Church of The Church of England and The Anglican Communion and stop for Evensong.

The following day on Sunday 24th at 12.noon will be the Deanery Celebration of the Millennium with a Sung Eucharist at Hayling School (in the open air) and the celebrant will be the Diocesan Bishop. (We shall have the usual services at St George's but no Evensong.)

On Saturday 30th at 12 noon at Portsmouth Cathedral there will be the Regional Millennium Celebration of Walsingham, when the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham will be brought from the Shrine for a Solemn Eucharist celebrated by the Bishop of Chichester when the Bishop of Portsmouth will preach. This is a very special event and I hope that all our Walsingham pilgrims and many others will be able to come along for this great event: "God With Us 2000".

With my prayers and blessing,

Your priest and friend.

Malcolm Ferrier.
