BOOK CORNER

In order to notify you of a latest title, I have postponed my original choice for November. As Advent Sunday falls on December 3rd and to allow time to process orders, my choice for November is an advent activity book for children, Let's Go to Christmas. Aimed at children aged between 5 and 8 years this book is in full colour with pages and activities to be coloured in and wiped off time and time again.

I liked the format, starting with a page on which to draw a family picture getting ready for Christmas. Room too to write an Advent promise and focus on doing something practical for somebody to help prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Ideas include making an Advent Candle and reading the short thought for each day which are included in the book together with the short prayer for each week of Advent. I liked the idea of the Advent Wreath with different coloured candles (three purple representing sorrow, one pink representing our joy and happiness at Christ's birth and one white placed in the middle on Christmas Day representing the Christ Child).

The delightful Indian Legend of the Rainbow is included and strikingly illustrated.

There is a numbered map of the journey similar to that which Joseph and Mary would have undertaken to reach Bethlehem. At each number there is provision to complete the sentence, 'Today I .......... to get ready for Jesus'. Again, with emphasis on putting others first, on giving rather than receiving.

Various other puzzles and short stories are included to complete a book that will be very difficult to put down. The fact that I wanted to have a go must be a good sign!

Bright, informative and very good value.

Let's Go to Christmas (Redemptorist Publications), £2.95.
