PCC MATTERS

At the PCC meeting on 26th April 2001 three new PCC members - June Bradley, Eric Bradshaw and Rosa Miller - were welcomed by the Chairman. Linda Wainwright and Jaye Warren were reappointed Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretary, respectively, and both were co-opted as voting members of the PCC.

The main discussion was of the serious state of our church's finances and the Treasurer's inability to meet quota payments from the current level of income. At a meeting between PCC and Deanery representatives on 5th April 2001, it was made quite clear that a reduction in our quota payments would not be countenanced, and the reasons were very convincing. Little of the quota goes towards diocesan overheads: in fact, 80% is returned to parishes in the form of clergy salaries and pensions and therefore, if parishes need to make economies, the quota should be the very last thing to be cut. With this as the starting point, the PCC agreed that a major push must be undertaken to increase our income substantially. At the moment St George's has the lowest rate of giving of all the churches in the Deanery. The quota has to be met and we cannot keep making good the shortfall from our investments. The TRIO (The Responsibility Is Ours) project had been used by another church in similar circumstances with great success. It is therefore planned to launch the programme at St George's in the Autumn.

On a lighter note, it was reported that £136 had been collected for Fr Towner and that he was to be presented with a book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, and a cheque for the balance. A new Organist and Director of Music has still to be appointed.

The full minutes of the meeting are on the notice board at the back of the church and the next meeting will be held on Thursday 28th June 2001.
