FINANCIAL UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who has responded so positively to the Vicar's letter and increased their planned giving contributions to St George's. The number of standing orders has risen as well as the value of those payments and this is by far the most administratively effective way of giving. However as most of you will have seen from recent press reports the financial burden on the church will continue to increase with a rise for stipends etc planned.

The value of church investments is diminishing like yours in the current financial climate but we already know our 2002 quota will rise by a further £2,917 to £41,807 (+7.5%) and as Father Malcolm quoted in a recent Sunday Bulletin that alone represents an extra £8 per day that has to be found. So please remain mindful of increasing your giving whenever you are able. And remember if you are a taxpayer every additional £1 turns into £1.28 courtesy of the taxman provided we know you are a taxpayer and you pay sufficient tax to cover the 28p we can claim back from the Inland Revenue.

Recent income has included £626 from dividends and interest from investments, collections at the Battle of Britain service £93.67 and a recent wedding £68.09 and £100.67 from the sale of votive candles. A £60 rebate has also been received from the Ecclesiastical Insurance voucher scheme.

The coffee morning for the Church Army on October 6th raised £53.65 and September's retiring collection for the Portsmouth Samaritans was £149.29. A cheque for £360 is about to be forwarded to the African Child Trust.

Work in the church grounds cost £50, a further repair to the rain water drainage system in the church tower cost £150, visiting clergy charges were £70 and the Toddlers' Service expenses £10.61. The quarterly organ tune and photocopier charges were £94 and £152.83 respectively.

Linda Wainwright, Hon. Treasurer to the P.C.C.
