STEPPING OUT - THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DIOCESE

The first of the "big three" diocesan services for 2002 is rapidly approaching. On Saturday 4th May we gather in Winchester Cathedral at 11.am to celebrate the launch of our diocese 75 years ago. On 1st May 1927, an Order in Council from King George V came into force founding the Diocese of Portsmouth out of Winchester's Archdeaconries of the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth.

We return to the mother church from which we sprang to give thanks for all that has been achieved and to re-launch ourselves to the mission of the Church in the very different and much less certain conditions of the early 21st century. Churchwardens, Readers and clergy all share aspects of the bishop's ministry, and have all received a personal invitation from him to join him in this ancient and beautiful building - any who have not yet responded are asked to do so as soon as possible.

It is hoped others from the parishes will want to be there too - Winchester has the longest nave in England so there is no problem with space! Some parishes may want to arrange a coach or minibus (set down point near King Alfred's statue). Others can bring their cars (there will be car parking designated for us by Winchester City Council), and others can come by train. Coaches from Portsmouth and Lymington are being laid on when requested - free for Isle of Wight churchwardens and their guest, and at a small cost for others where space is available.

Churchwardens are the special guests of the bishop to lunch in the Guildhall afterwards - and a guest for whom they need to apply for a ticket (cheque for £7 payable to Portsmouth Diocesan Board of Finance). The rest of us are encouraged to bring a picnic to eat in the Cathedral Close or nearby in Abbey Gardens - or maybe to splash out and sample the delights of Winchester's eating places. During the afternoon cathedral guides will be available to give us conducted tours of the cathedral.

The service is non-Eucharistic. Bell ringers from our diocese will ring before and afterwards. Portsmouth Cathedral's choir and organists will lead the music. The bishop will be accompanied by his ecumenical partners from the other denominations in Hampshire, and the Bishop of Winchester will send us out with his blessing. A team of pilgrims will be commissioned for their three-day walk to Portsmouth. The churchwardens will then process out with our bishop along the High Street to the Guildhall.

Details of the various practical arrangements will be sent to parishes early in March - meanwhile any questions to Canon David Henley (01489 877512). It will be a day to remember - please try to be there.
