THE JOB NOBODY KNOWS

This was the title of a little book given to me by a former Bishop of Portsmouth. How true, for as a very young curate, I came across my vicar on his knees, not praying, but repairing the floor of the lavatory in the hall, for fear that one of the youth club should fall through. He commented, 'You do a lot of deaconing in this job'. It may not always be realised that most priests spend a year as a deacon befor ebeing ordained priest. So it becomes a juggling act, which comes first? The early church decided that a clear distinction be made between the two callings. We could go further as the cartoon suggests. (Acts 6, vv.2-7).

"It's too much! Preaching and teaching is one thing, but add on committees, home visits, hospital visits, choir practice, church buildings, fund raising, evangelism and administration is another. It's time the laity helped out a bit." Acts 6 vv2-7.
