JUBILEE FAMILY FUN DAY

22nd June 2002

Following a number of Fun Day meetings enthusiastically attended by all members of the Fun Day Committee which included representatives from the Baptist and Roman Catholic Churches, and with a considerable amount of work being undertaken in preparation, the Fun Day got off to a good start.

St George's volunteers arrived in strength to man/woman(!) the entrance, kitchen (have you ever seen a better display of cakes for the kiddies?), craft stalls, games, BBQ, competitions etc. Our "official photographer" went to work capturing the enjoyment and general fun feeling of the event. The weather was kind to us - not too hot and no rain despite the dire prediction during the week!

The Mayor and Mayoress of Havant went round all the activities meeting as many people as possible and remarking that it was an outstanding event - all the more remarkable because it was free. He especially appreciated not being asked to buy raffle tickets! The Mayor presented the competition prizes and was delighted to receive a commemorative spoon.

A good number of people stayed for the Ecumenical Service led by Father Malcolm with Rev Bob Simpson from the Baptist Church. Mary Baker read a prayer on behalf of the Sacred Heart RC Church and a song was sung by pupils of St Peter's RC School. Following the National Anthem, the Church bells rang out marking the end of a very happy Stepping Out/Jubilee Fun Day, mainly funded by Awards for All, HBC and Havant Business Partnership.

The success of the day depended very largely on the willing participation of 65-70 members of the congregation who worked extremely hard all day and to whom we offer our heartfelt thanks.

We hope to build on the ecumenical aspect of this event and that all three churches will join together for our Taizé Service at 7.15.pm on Thursday 17th October 2002 (please be sure to come).
