BOOK CORNER

With the darker evenings in mind, my suggested book for November is a storytime, colouring and activity book for children, 'Barnabas and The Stars' written and illustrated by Taffy Davies.

I picked this book up partly because of the cover, a cheery, smiling 'Barnabas' (who is a little school bus) together with his driver, Joe, and a group of children look excitedly into the night sky tinged with yellow, orange and pink. Inside reveals that Joe also helps at the village church and enjoys sharing with the children the stories in the Bible. Barnabas loves to listen too and parks as near to the Church as possible. Being the only bus in the area means that Barnabas also takes the children on special trips and in this book he takes the children to the planetarium. (Cue puzzle to find the quickest route to the planetarium). Joe is inspired by the visit and has an idea for his talk on Sunday, to tell the children about Abram to whom God promised a family as numerous as the stars in the sky. The story unfolds with information about Isaac and Rebecca (with a clever lesson for Lofty who did not want to share his ball) and Jacob and Esau linking in with information gleamed from the visit to the planetarium. Scattered throughout the book are various picture and word puzzles, a game to play and attractive cartoon type drawings, in true Taffy Davies' style, to colour in.

The other reason for picking up this book was because I knew that it was one of a range from the Bible Reading Fellowship. A clever and enjoyable book.
