BOOK CORNER

I am taking a little time out this month to write a few notes about the Bookstall. This has been going since the late eighties and the sole aim is to provide a range of affordable books for both children and adults with a Christian theme. My suppliers range from Redemptorist Publications in Alton, SPCK in Chichester to Church House in London. I also look in our own local Bookshop, The Baytree, fairly regularly to see their range. Some of the recent children's books have been obtained from J Source, the Christian Bookshop, in Havant.

It is always difficult to choose a title that will have wide appeal. I have tended to link in titles with the Church year where possible. Book Corners at Christmass and Easter usually contain several gift suggestions.

Is there a particular type of book that you would like to see reviewed? (My 'rule' has been to keep to books that are Christian in content. You may not agree with this). Have you read a book recently that you would like to share with others?

Even on holiday I can be spotted wandering around the library (yes, really!!) or gazing at books in a shop. So it was especially exciting to receive through the post recently a complimentary copy of 'The Kentle-Shaddy in Felmunia' from the author, Eileen Mohr. I reviewed its predecessor, 'The Kentle-Shaddy Knows Something' in November 2001 and shall review this latest book next month.

For several years now the Bookstall has also offered a range of high quality cards. These come from The Good News Travelling Library at Purbrook which is under the careful direction of Cedric and Margaret Moppett. I am very grateful to Cedric and Margaret for this supply for which they kindly allow a 10% discount. The Bookstall gives a donation to the Church each year. In addition, you may be interested to know that in purchasing the cards you have also helped in the following projects: -

Distribution of Bibles and Testaments in France in 2003

Provision of 50,000 tracts for local missionaries working in villages in India

Christian outreach in Israel at this difficult time.

Do keep looking. If I can help with choices of books or prayer cards, I certainly will. If you have any ideas of items that you would like to see on the Bookstall, please let me know. Meantime, the darker nights are drawing in - time for a book!
