PCC MATTERS

The PCC held an extraordinary meeting on 23rd September (in advance of the meeting arranged with the Archdeacon on 2nd October when major decisions would have to be made) to try to reach a consensus on what was sought in a new incumbent for St George's. After a full and lengthy discussion over the issue of whether a female minister would be acceptable, during which each person expressed his or her opinion and submissions were read from people absent from the meeting, it was clear that, although the majority had no objection to women priests (three expressed very strong objections), they felt that now was not the right time for St George's, believing that it would cause too much conflict within the congregation.

At the meeting on 2nd October with The Venerable Chris Lowson, Archdeacon of Portsdown, the PCC voted on the resolutions relating to women priests as follows:

Resolution A: This PCC would not accept a woman as the minister who presides at or celebrates Holy Communion or pronounces Absolution in this parish. The votes were four in favour and nine against. The motion was not carried.

Resolution B: This PCC would not accept a woman as Incumbent or Priest-in-Charge of the benefice or as a Team Vicar in the Benefice. The votes were seven in favour and six against. The motion was carried.

Also at this meeting it was declared that, as a result of a ballot, the two Parish Representatives who will be actively involved in the selection of a new incumbent will be Richard Spurgeon (Churchwarden) and Richard Handy.

The Archdeacon paid tribute to Fr Malcolm's ministry at St George's and stressed that Waterlooville is a significant parish in the diocese and one with great potential. It was a very helpful meeting. The Archdeacon was both encouraged and encouraging.

A few other normal business matters were discussed but space does not allow coverage this month. I'll try to cover most things next time. Meanwhile, the full minutes are displayed at the back of the church. The next PCC meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th November at 8.pm.
