My suggested book for June / July is a wonderful Devotional Book entitled A Pocket Manual of Anglo-Catholic Devotion compiled by Andrew Burnham.

This is a very comprehensive manual of prayers and devotions. (There is a 'parent' edition that has, amongst other items, extended provision of alternative psalms and canticles in the Office and the lists of 'Long Readings' in the Church Year.)

Sources range from Common Worship and The Book of Common Prayer to The Walsingham Pilgrims' Manual and 'In the Silence of the Heart' by Kathryn Spink.

The contents are divided into the main headings, eg 'Prayer in the Morning' and then sub-divided, (eg 'Morning Prayers', 'Morning Prayer' and the 'Office of Lauds'), 'Initiation and Healing' (sub-divided 'Baptism and Confirmation', 'Reconciliation' and 'Prayers for the Sick'.) Other main headings include 'The Eucharist' and 'The Church's Year' together with a selection of Psalms and Canticles. Also the extra chaplet of the Rosary, 'The Luminous Mysteries' introduced in 2002.

Although one would need to have quite a large pocket to carry this tome around comfortably, it has been so well organised and is such a delight to use, any 'extra' weight can be endured cheerfully.

Andrew Burnham is Bishop of Ebbsfleet, a Provincial Episcopal Visitor in the Province of Canterbury. He was appointed to the Church of England Liturgical Commission in 1995 and played a part, both in the Commission and in General Synod, in forming the liturgies of Common Worship. He is married with two children and lives in Oxford.
