Book Corner

Once again, Lent is appearing on the horizon and this month's book aims to help 8 to 12 year olds with their meditations and prayers. Before any children start to yawn, just hear the title, 'Dr Devo's New Fangled Lickety-Split Devotions'.

Dr Devo's New Fangled Lickety Split Devotions

The book is the compilation of children's answers to hundreds of questions put by the author, Tim Wesemann. So it is written for children by children. Dr Devo (short for 'Devo'tion) and his lab assistant DJ (Devo Junior) who happens to be a rat (hooray!) work with the information collected to arrange them into an unusual but lively set of devotions. Different and often moving, like Tyler's prayer, 'Dear God, please don't let my sister or brother get sick like me. Amen'... Tyler has Leukaemia.

Amongst the questions asked are, what questions would you like to ask Jesus (15 altogether). Is it a sin to get angry? and what was the easiest animal for Adam to name?

There is humour too, under the heading LOL! ('Laughing Out Loud'). This appealed to me.

Sunday School teacher: "Manuel, please recite the Ten Commandments for the class."

Manuel: "Do they have to be in order?"

Teacher: "No, they can be in any order."

Manuel: "Okay. 2, 7, 9, 1, 3, 10, 5, 6, 8, 4."

This is not a Lent book as such but can be used throughout the year. It is a fun and interesting way to learn about God's love through Jesus.

Dr Devo's New-Fangled Lickety-Split Devotions by Tim Wesemann. (Zonderkidsz). ISBN 310-70697-1). £6.99.
