Fickle birds

The birds in my garden do seem so fickle. Try as I may to have a wild bird friendly garden with bird food treats, plants, trees, a bath table and nest boxes, not many seem to lodge. All the birds visit for the expensive seed cake and meal worms but once eaten, off they go never to return until the next bird cake is put out. Then whoosh... they all return from nowhere, ready to fight if they have to, eating only the expensive treats, disappearing as quickly as they came.

The exception of course is the jolly old robin that stays, even when the meal worms have been eaten. He sits and hops about looking for any food, just like the blackbird staying until dusk. But those blue, coal and great tits, starlings and finches, they are so fussy, only wanting the best seed cake. They don't ever glance at anything else and leave the fat ball hanging like a bad old apple.

So please can you help, do you have a good bird seed cake recipe to tempt all the birds which does not cost a fortune? Oh... I forgot and the squirrels, who get 11 out of 10 for staying power!
