Book Corner

It is the summer yet again! This year for suggestions I have turned to my Book Club, the Christian Book Club, who offer a varied and excellent selection of titles bi-monthly.

Here are a few to consider but do have a look at their new website, www.agreatread.co.uk

Simply Christian by Tom Wright (SPCK) RRP £8.99

Tom Wright's 21st century equivalent of C.S.Lewis's classic "Mere Christianity". Tom Wright's book provides an intelligent and mature introduction to the Christian Faith - what Christians believe and why and how we should live.

Show Me the Way, An Inspirational Anthology by Wendy Craig. (Hodder and Stoughton), RRP £9.99

Wendy had a strong faith from an early age but fame and the demands of show business enticed her away from God. Later in life, an emptiness and loneliness led her to a spiritual experience that took her back to her faith. "Show me the Way" is a collection of writings that have encouraged her own journey through life.

The Truce of God: Peacemaking in Troubled Times by Rowan Williams. (Canterbury Press), RRP £8.99

This revised and updated edition is a wide-ranging study of the causes, effects and proper Christian response to the violence that pervades every area of daily life - from popular entertainment, to street crime, to international relations. Archbishop Williams explores the inner fears and fantasies that give rise to violent attitudes and behaviour.

Extreme Anglicanism. A Liturgical Guide to the Sporting Year by Catherine Fox. (Monarch). RRP £7.99

In a bid to connect with the nation's obsession with sport to its flagging Christian faith (and with tongue firmly in cheek), Catherine suggests a completely new liturgical year, starting with the season of football (colour black and white stripes)!

The Tales Out of Times series by Donna Vann. (Christian Focus). RRP £7.98 (set of two books. Age range 9 to 14.

King Arthur's Ransom.

The Kingdom of Caerlon is caught in a power struggle. King Uther is on his deathbed and the golden torc is missing. Vibiana knows who should be king... Arthur! But he will only win the throne if he can outwit his enemies and find the mysterious torc.

Corin's Quest.

Corin is determined to find out evil Hamo's dark secret. Aware that his life could be in danger he has to be very careful. As he starts his quest, he discovers a mystery that tells him of his own past, one that will change his life forever...

All suggestions taken from the May/June edition of "A Great Read" the new magazine of The Christian Book Club.

Happy summer reading everyone!
