Children's Extra

Lent: What's That all about then?

A Shrove Tuesday Children’s Workshop.

On a damp Shrove Tuesday morning, 18 youngsters aged 5 to 11 headed for St George's church hall for a fun workshop. The children enjoyed hunting for ‘pancakes’ in the church and then drawing and writing about things they can thank God for. They were in fine voice as we sang a thank you song. Then it was off to the hall for pancake racing, Eve Inwood demonstrating the perfect pancake flip. They cooled off with drinks and, you guessed it, jammy pancakes. We made palm fronds and chocolate crispy ‘bonfires’ in our craft session and then Fr Mike took us back in time to Palm Sunday where we sang and waved our palm fronds. We processed back to church where the children wrote sorry prayers on paper crosses and Fr Mike burned some palm crosses with their paper ones and talked about the ash for Ash Wednesday. Back to the hall for a circle game of ‘fires’, ‘palms’ and ‘pancakes’ and a final prayer and farewell. The children all went home happy with their palm fronds, chocolate crispies, and a ‘cross in my pocket’ disc.A big thank you to Eve, Jules, Lindsay, Dawn and of course Fr Mike, for helping to make this a very successful morning.
