A Holiday in May

At the last St George’s Auction, Rod Dawson bid for a one week holiday in our Bluebird Caravan on a family site in Owermoigne, Dorset. This poem was sent to us by Rod as a ‘thank you’ for a wonderful holiday.

A Holiday in May

At Whitsuntide, thrice blessed families to Dorset Dinneen Caravan did stay,
For sev’n days’ fun and frolic, and from humdrum toil to get away.
Journey down, a Rhinefield pause, our leisure stop to take.
This place of high Renown a rug-spread picnic we did make.
An early field walk, lake and little stream to pass,
And gentle stop for delight and splendour in the grass.
A trudge and climb up doughty White Horse Hill,
Of happy meand’rings this lovely day we had our fill.
At Lulworth cove we bathed and talked and flew our kite.
Sun-drenched and ‘happy-hill-rolled’ - an awesome sight!
Thro’ rain and hail, car braced to Sunday Church did go,
Rector welcoming, lusty singing but hymns by organ slow.
Weymouth beckoned and we supped on fish and chips and drink,
Till even’ sun o’er Chesil in the west did sink.
At nearby Dorchester and T’Puddle martyr’d arts displayed,
Reminders of our harsher past, emotions deep dismayed.
From war-ranged Tyneham and Worbro’ Bay occurred a meet
Of families agnate and cognate, cousins warmly there to greet.
Abbot’s garden and the Swannery through the torrential rain,
We enjoyed the bird-filled feeding time, then Rod duck-herded down the lane.
At Sutton Poyntz Springhead, the Jazzy two did play -
To dancing duo in the ‘pub, to end another pleasant day.
We toiled in tulgy woodland, seeking closèd Hardy home.
And revised our steps to Roman glade, in sylvan paths to roam.
Ah Caravan! Holy days of pleasure now achieved,
Return now home, our souls refreshed, our cares relieved.
