Who are the Lions?
Ordinary people achieving amazing things!
Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world, with over 44,500 clubs in 192 countries and geographical areas of the world, and over 1.4 million Lions, Lionesses and Leos serving their communities. In the British Isles and Ireland, we have over 900 of these clubs, with a membership approaching 20,000. The District of 105D has a membership of over 1,400 within 67 clubs covering Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and parts of Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxford.
Our principal aim is to provide assistance and funds for those less fortunate than ourselves, a the same time enabling us to enjoy the fellowship and fun that can be derived from participating in Lions activities. Membership is by personal invitation to men and women, who express a wish to help their local community, and who are prepared to abide by the Code of Ethics and Objects of the Association. Lions Clubs activities are many and varied, with local, national and international projects being carried out or funded. Our international campaign “Sightfirst” raised over $13 billion, which has been used to assist in the eradication of preventable and curable blindness in the world and now supports the Lions’ Eye Health Programme, an ongoing project.
We collect unwanted spectacles for distribution and reuse in the third world, providing sight to those who would otherwise be blind.
At home, Lions assist the elderly, the disabled and under-privileged families, we support those with hearing, speech and learning difficulties; we work with diabetics and sponsor the Medic Alert Foundation, a service for those in our society at risk with a medical condition and are supporting the complementary Message in a Bottle programme which assists the emergency services in providing a swift and correct response to vulnerable people in the community. We work with the youth of our communities, arranging national football competitions; youth award programmes, youth exchange and international peace poster competitions. Our youth outreach with preventative drug programmes are in primary and secondary schools and youth groups and clubs.
