JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR 1999

On 22nd of April the Link Group and some of the Youth Club went to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to see Jesus Christ Superstar. The show followed the happenings leading up to the crucifixion and features the words and music of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. For some of us it was an enthusiastic revisit, for others it was a first time experience. It was an interesting interpretation in modern costume (as someone pointed out, it was a bit difficult for a guard's ear to be cut off in the Garden of Gethsemene when he was kitted out like Darth Veda!) The disciples were dressed like a variety of pop groups in a mix of styles and the Jews were depicted in long black coats and hats. The simple scenery with balcony levels which moved up and down between pillars gave scope for scenes to blend into one another and the use of video in the final scene brought it all up to date - nobody does anything these days without instant news coverage! The only thing missing was the cock crow after Peter's third denial - we think we will write to Sir Andrew to suggest it be written in. Here are some of the comments collected after the event:

"A realistic and impressive production which provided a different way to understand Jesus' suffering. The special effects added to the excitement." "Magical and inspiring, especially the guitar work. Worth every penny." "Going to Jesus Christ Superstar was the best night out for ages. The show gave a great atmosphere. I would definitely watch it again." "At 6 ft 4 ins the seats could have been a little further apart. However the show itself was the only time I have been to the Mayflower and been so truly moved. I was speechless at the end of the night." "At times it was hard to understand what was happening but I enjoyed the music, acting and sets." "The crucifixion scene was very impressive. I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did and it was a fun and interesting way of learning about Jesus. I could see it over and over again." "Everyone seemed to enjoy the King Herod scene - a typical showpiece with bright lights, colour, music and comedy that everyone can relate to." "So good I went back and saw it again!"
