A LETTER FROM FR RON BOWLES

I was pleased to see Winifred Mancz who asked me to write a few words. The year started well for Mary and me as we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary, and, in 1953 also, I was ordained deacon. One of my first services was on Coronation Day. Afterwards we all packed into the Churchwarden's lounge to see the great event on television on one of the few sets around at the time.

When I found that I was to have an operation for a new hip I was very pleased. Sadly, it did not work out. My femur had broken up so that I could not have a replacement hip and so now I have no hip. Just a few steps into a wheelchair are all I can manage. It's been a blow and has taken some time to adjust. Coming to church takes too much out of me, but Mary and I celebrate the Eucharist at home using Common Worship.

I had a month in Haslar Hospital followed by another month in Havant War Memorial Hospital. In Haslar, there were many Philippine nurses, nearly all Roman Catholics, all very caring. As the Iraq War approached, many of the nurses were called up and two wards were then put together. The Chaplain brought sick communion on Sunday - also my Sunday Paper.

One of the things I miss about not being able to come to Church, apart from the human fellowship, is hymn singing. Radio and Television have very few programmes. There is Songs of Praise but many of the hymns are rather ordinary. ITV does have a full service sometimes, as does the BBC, but often it is just the odd hymn during interviewing some personality. I believe it's due to the fact that viewing figures for services are low. Surveys have suggested that a good percentage of people believe in God but it makes little difference to Church attendance. When they do go, they say they get nothing out of it. That wasn't my experience. I always felt blessed and strengthened in faith.

Our new prayer book (Common Worship) has been widely accepted. Most seem to find that it can suit their style of worship.

Finally, I would like to say that I valued Father Malcolm's ministry. He came to see me both at hospital and at home. I pray that he enjoys his retirement. Now, of course, our prayers are for a new Vicar who will keep the Church in the traditions we have established here and help us to new insights.

FATHER RON BOWLES

We send Fr. Ron and Mary our love and prayers and miss seeing them at Church.
