The Parish Church of St George the Martyr, Waterlooville

The mandatory five yearly architect’s inspection of St. George’s Church has identified £50,000 of necessary repairs, most significant of which is the work required to the tower roof, which is leaking and several of the main support timbers are beginning to rot!

The figure of £50,000 is the architect’s best guess for repairs although the true cost cannot be determined until scaffolding is erected and a full inspection is undertaken. We have already authorised the architect to proceed with work, appointing a structural engineer, and obtaining quotations for the required work.

We are currently holding some money in our investment account. That money is a dwindling reserve left from a property sale many years ago. It is well short of the sum required, and St. George’s are left with an enormous and not finally quantifiable, fundraising commitment.

As we get a more accurate picture of the true cost of the repair work we are also planning to contact various grant agencies and local businesses to assist with the fundraising. We will also be holding a very specific Gift Day in the autumn in which to focus the drive.
