The Parish Church of St George the Martyr, Waterlooville

Subs Day. Havant Deanery’s annual Subs Day was held on Thursday 30th January at Denmead Church Hall. There were stalls for Bring & Buy items and MU merchandise, refreshments and a raffle.

AFIA and AGM. At the coffee morning in St George’s Church hall on Wednesday 12th February we had a Bring and Buy Stall, refreshments and a raffle. A total of £100 was raised for AFIA (the Away From It All holiday scheme).

The AGM which was to follow was postponed until 9th April as there were insufficient members present.

February meeting. At our branch meeting on 20th February our speaker was Sheila King. Her interesting and most informative talk was about her six years as MU President for the Portsmouth Diocese. During this time Sheila visited every branch, attended conferences, training sessions and AGM’s.

She also spoke about the role of the Mothers’ Union as a worldwide organisation in 80 countries with approximately 4 million members.

The MU sends relief to areas affected by famines, floods and riots. Their Literacy and Numeracy Programme has been running for over ten years and has enabled 55,000 people (mainly women) to read and write. They have volunteers in 90 prisons, run parenting programmes in the UK and Overseas, and send representatives to the United Nations in New York.

Locally the MU runs AFIA holidays, provides baby clothes for the Neo-natal Unit and toilet bags for the A&E Dept at QA Hospital.

These and many other projects make the MU, both locally and worldwide, a busy and valuable organisation.
