Eco Church Film Night

It was a real pleasure to welcome to the Eco Church film night several guests from local churches who are also completing the A Rocha Eco Church awards scheme. Our starting point was a mutual enthusiasm for protecting and respecting ‘God’s Acre’. Rev Liz led us in a prayer.

The chosen film was not a typical David Attenborough film! Climate Change – The Facts was a fairly brutal documentary by many leading climate change experts who emphasised the dangerous situation our world is in right now. Rising air and sea temperatures, melting polar icecaps, rising sea levels, extremes of weather, loss of species of plants and animals: all are changing at an alarming rate. This is already impacting on people’s lives and will continue to do so unless we acknowledge the need for radical changes in the way we live our lives.

Several of our guests shared their experiences of the Eco Church scheme and described changes they had made which had the greatest impact. One guest told us about the plastics recycling scheme they had set up which raises money as well as reducing the amount of plastic entering landfill. Sue James from St Wilfrid’s invited us all to get involved in the Havant Borough Great Big Green Week. (Poster for this on the hall noticeboard). Tony Kightly was an active conservationist in Bovey Tracey and recommended a Garden Share Scheme to put people who had unused vegetable garden areas in contact with people who did not have a garden but who wished that they had!

Rev Liz and Mo spoke about the enthusiasm of the Toddler group and Sunday school in helping with our enrichment of the churchyard for wildlife.

We look forward to more collaboration with other local Eco churches in the future.
